Ethel Watts Mumford was born in Philadelphia, PA. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and her graduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Pharmacy. Upon graduation she was commissioned as an officer in the Women’s Army Corps Reserve and served for two years on active duty at Fort Lee, Virginia.
